In the midst of never-ending COVID restrictions, school distance learning and working remotely, a little fresh air and change in scenery is much-needed. It was a Wednesday on a lunch break when I realized the kids could only ride in circles in the cul-de-sac for so long. So, we hopped in the car and went for a short drive to Lake Calavera.
At one point this lake was an active volcano. Remnants can still be found today around the lake and various hiking trails. Although the volcano may now be extinct, the plant and wildlife are definitely not which are abundant all along the trails. The lake also provides a sanctuary for various birds you typically don’t see in upland coastal habitats, like egrets, herons, ducks and other water fowl.

The Lake Calavera Trail loop is one of the more extensive trail networks in Carlsbad, with connections to a multitude of other trails. The trails offer an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and get exercise for all ages and abilities. If you’re feeling adventurous and up for a challenge, you can take a trail to the summit of the hill. A steep hike with a rewarding view.
On this day, we were on a time crunch, so we elected for the easier trails around the lake with Stamp, our terrier mix, in tow. (Yup – dogs are allowed on leashes). Although we didn’t have quite the awesome view you get from the top, there was no lack of nature and excitement around each turn of the trail.

As it was mid-day on a Wednesday, there wasn’t too much foot traffic, but be prepared for heavier traffic on the weekends as Lake Calavera is located in the midst of a sprawling north county San Diego neighborhood.
There is a restroom, which comes in handy for newly potty-trained toddlers, and a drinking fountain (for you and your dog). The trails are also welcome to mountain bikers, which we ran into a couple times. Unfortunately, fishing is not allowed. The lake is enjoyed only for its scenic qualities, not for it’s angling abilities.
All in all, I would highly recommend Lake Calavera as an escape to nature in the midst of a busy Southern California city. With a variety of trails for all experience levels, Lake Calavera is perfect for the whole family to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
